null kyo shi sui is a work that visualizes the reverberations of life as a kaleidoscope “under a digital water mirror.” The images that pass through the LED cube’s top surface are like fragments of memories that rise and flicker from behind the water mirror, emerging from the nothingness of the void, then vanishing. In his work, Yoichi Ochiai confronts the manifestation of digital nature and ponders the yearning and emotion that lie between mass and image. Digital images with no mass are exhibited as objects that dissolve into living space. Drifting on the boundaries between the materiality they symbolize and maintaining their phantom resonance, they acquire indistinct contours as they infiltrate the viewer's mind. Taking both indefinite and finite form, the images are simultaneously ephemeral and extremely precious. Flashes of life, like a kaleidoscope, combine with one’s reflection in the water mirror. Formless memories and emotions take on a new form in the tranquility of the water mirror — a form of “being and non-being” that only exists in a world in which computers and nature blend enigmatically.
