Transformation of Material Things in Digital Nature Scenery with Synesthesia Image and Matter, Sehnsucht nach Masse

Yoichi Ochiai freely crosses the boundaries of research and artistic activity, and continues to explore and express his philosophy.
While engaging in media art as a meta-artistic activity that includes the invention of media devices and media contexts, he continues to think about the worldview of the Digital Nature, in which the material world with mass and the digital world of massless data melt together. In this context, media art is positioned as the vernacular folk art(“Mingei” in Japanese) of the Digital Nature, and is the subject of his activities.

Based on the idea of oriental materialization (all things change and circulate without any formality), which is derived from Laozi and Zhuangzi, the works are rooted in the idea of the relationship between imaging devices and media devices since the 19th century, digital transformation and oriental materialization, and the similarity of natural phenomena and data.

The subjects and sub-titles of Ochiai's work encompass the following: the boundaries and harmonization of image and matter, the analogy between computation and nature, and the mediation of the massive and the immaterial. The post-industrial society, wabi and sabi in the Digital Nature society, and the concept of the Sehnsucht nach Masse(Longing for mass) from a Digital perspective.

The morpho butterfly motif, which is frequently used in Ochiai's work, is a symbol of morpho (form) in the West and a symbol of materialization in the East, and it transcends the context of both East and West.

The mediums used range from the classic platinum print as a photographic technique, to structural color prints by lithography with thin-film interference, to ultrasound-controlled reflective displays, to modern interpretations of 19th-century projection equipment (variants of the Zoetrope and Epidiascope), to the latest computer technology and Through works in a variety of forms, from applied physics to classical photographic techniques, he questions the finiteness and massiveness of media devices and what it is that cannot be converted into data, and explores new ways of being with nature to evoke the longing we feel for nature and scenery.

Materialization of Wave
Fiary Lights

Materialization/
Transformation

Colloidal Display KENPOKU ART 2016

As time and space move back and forth, vision becomes hearing, hearing becomes tactile, and tactile is converted into vision, so the mutual conversion of the sensory organs provides an opportunity to perceive the world synesthesically.

Sometimes they have a material form, are converted into information, and while they look like images, they are output as matter, or have a form that is neither image nor matter.

In the process of materialization and transformation, I wander along the border between digital and analog, image and matter, while maintaining a longing for the melancholy of the untransformed and its mass.

Digital Nature.

I find the spirituality of unity with nature in materialization and transformation.
