The world is a smooth dream that floats on the interface of a mirror, between matter and image.
What we call reality is a fleeting, fluid phenomenon in which the infinite possibilities latent beyond the boundary appear through the reflection of the present instant. It rises from the “null” of digital / computational nature—a pre‐semantic field where, precisely because there is nothing, anything can come to be—and returns there again.
This work, “Mirror Portal of Emergence”, is a variable boundary device for experiencing that instant of manifestation. Grounded in the philosophy of “null” and the immediacy of the now, it forms a bending, transforming mirror portal composed of a deformable mirror membrane. Here, the boundary between matter and image dissolves; the viewer’s body and the surrounding scenery, subject and object, past and future commingle and shift fluidly.
In the Meiji era, when Japan translated “art” as “芸術 geijutsu”, “love” as “愛ai”, and “photography” as “写真 shashin”, a new boundary between image and thing was born, and people’s inner landscapes were transformed. The same process reinvented the place now called Omotesandō—from farmland, through an urban void, into a national and spiritual approach.
This work seeks to re‐stage, spatially and philosophically, that undifferentiated fusion of
boundaries. Standing before “Mirror Portal of Emergence”, the viewer merges with the figure reflected on the interface, becoming the very process by which concepts arise as part of environment and phenomenon, and repeatedly encounters “a first time.”
It is not a dramatic disclosure of a border, but the appearance of a smooth, gentle dream opened by the faint tremor that arises on the mirror’s surface.
