What humans perceive as objects is, in fact, a semiotic cosmos. On the boundary between image and flow, signs arise in an instant and vanish in an instant. Some emerge with sharp clarity; others appear only as faint indications—blurred beyond focus or displaced by parallax. Their generation and disappearance follow the grammar of the tetralemma (existence, non-existence, both, neither), traversing the phases of a field without end.
The spatial structure operates on two strata. The reflection of the Mirror Portal of Emergence’s mirror membrane activates the stratum of the non-symbolic—life without signs. Here, vibrations, wind, the breathing and footsteps of passing people are returned only as fluctuations, never recorded. The mirror functions as a display of nature, withholding images and revealing pre-linguistic life itself.
In contrast, the indoor Liquid Universe, an AI-rendered tetralemmatic cosmos, belongs to the symbolic stratum—life with signs. Within an LED light-field, fragments of symbols are dynamically generated, layered, and unraveled. In existence, symbols arise; in non-existence, only traces remain; in both, they become palimpsests in double exposure; in neither, the very act of arising is suspended. At times, even the fourfold logic is discarded, leaving only conditions behind. This is Love at First: an interpretation of the phenomenon in which a single glance triggers a phase transition in consciousness, embodied as a video installation.
As paired works, these installations present the difference and continuity between life without symbols and life centered on them, embodied physically in computational nature’s dual phases of reflection and self-luminosity. In the non-symbolic stratum, life appears as the pure motion of being, without forming into figure. In the symbolic stratum, signs are generated, transformed, and dissipated, and it is the viewer who assigns meaning to them. Meaning is not a given; the viewer’s glance shifts the boundary conditions, selects the center of gravity of the sign, and updates the phase of the field.
Signs are born with corporeality, breathe in the margins, and return through forgetting. The mirror carries the non-symbolic; the light carries the symbolic; and between them, both run through the space at once. This is the tetralemmatic morphogenesis of the semiotic cosmos.
